Hematuria :

Hematuria is a health disorder in which blood or red blood cells is present in the urine. The blood may either be visible through microscope or to naked eye. It actually indicated that something is causing bleeding in the genitourinary tract, which comprises of the kidneys, the tubes carrying urine from the kidneys to the bladder (ureters), the prostate gland (in males), the bladder, or the tube carting urine from the bladder to the urethra.

Causes of Hematuria :

  • Benign familial hematuria
  • Bladder cancer
  • Urinary Schistosomiasis
  • IgA nephropathy arising during viral infections in predisposed patients
  • Kidney stones
  • Ureteral Pelvic Junction Obstruction (UPJ) occurring from birth. In this problem, ureter is blocked between the kidney and bladder causing blood in the urine.
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Sickle cell trait precipitating large amounts of red blood cell discharge
  • Arteriovenous deformity of the kidney
  • Obstruction of the inferior vena cava
  • vascular abnormality

Diagnose Hematuria:

  • Ultrasound investigation of the renal tract
  • X-rays and CT scans for identifying stones
  • Cystoscopy along with biopsy of suspected lesions is employed to inspect for bladder cancer

Hematuria Treatment :

Treatment for Hematuria is prescribed in accordance with its cause. Mainly, it may range from antibiotic medication to surgery, as per the underlying cause.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia: To treat BPH, a number of treatments are present. Avoiding foods and beverages from the diet and over-the-counter medications that bother the prostate and root it to bulge can be tried. In most of cases, terazosin is prescribed to treat BPH. However, if this does not result in proper treatment, a surgeon should be contacted for the removal of all or part of the gland.

In fact, in cases where Hematuria occurs because of malfunctioning of an organ, surgery is performed to repair the injury. Bleeding from blood vessels may be impeded by applying heat or covering them with sutures. A surgeon may also need to remove all or few part of an injured kidney, ureter, or bladder. Also, to remove tumors or lumps in the kidney or bladder causing hematuria, surgery is needed.

Kidney or Bladder Stones: In case of patients having kidney or bladders stones, removal or the break up of the stones is prescribed. Special measures to prevent their recurrence are also taken.

Kidney problems: If your cause comes from your kidneys then surgery or dialysis may be the hematuria treatment.

Medications: Minor cases may get solved with proper medications. Antibiotics such as quinine, rifampin, phenytoinare mostly prescribed.
